Our campaign succeeds so Oban House lives to fight another day…
After a long campaign to save a part of Beeston’s heritage, and protect our Conservation Areas and heritage assets, we were delighted to witness unanimous refusal to grant planning permission to demolish Oban House.
“Please don’t make this one of the 50,000 buildings the UK demolishes each week.”

All Councillors on Planning Committee agreed that the building should not be torn down. Our Chair, Tamar, was selected as a speaker at the meeting, “Demolishing Oban House and replacing it with a building of substandard quality, character and design constitutes to piecemeal erosion of the Conservation Areas plus the total loss of a valuable building and its mature trees.
‘I understand Manor House’s need for greater capacity but their needs and the calls of more than 800 local petitioners, 131 objections – including The Victorian Society, Historic Buildings and Places, Civic Society, and others like me – are not mutually exclusive. Please don’t make this one of the 50,000 buildings the UK demolishes each week, Beeston has already lost more than its fair share.” Chair of the Committee, Cllr. David Watts, said, “Just because there is a need, it doesn’t mean this solution is the right one.” We are very glad the Council has now stepped in to help Manor Surgery find a solution to the problem of greater capacity in a new surgery.
