Broxtowe Borough Council (BBC) and Beeston Civic Society are working together to create Broxtowe’s Local Heritage List (LHL) of heritage buildings, spaces and objects.
Our district doesn’t currently have an LHL. This is something the Civic Society has long tried to rectify. In 2021 we called upon BBC and other groups, and bodies to get our heads together to create an LHL – and have now convened a group of volunteers to engage with groups and residents to help make it happen.
What is a Local Heritage List?
An LHL is a formal list of ‘heritage assets’ (i.e. buildings, monuments, sites, places, areas, historic parks and gardens or other designated landscapes) in the area. It helps recognise, celebrate, and protect the buildings and places providing architectural, artistic, or historic interest to our town.
We do have Listed Buildings, an Histroic Environment Register and Conservation Areas and some of our longstanding members and CAMRA have done much hard work and research identifying, compiling and assessing local ‘heritage assets’. However we want to ensure that everyone who has an interest in our local town and neighbourhoods has a chance to have their say and propose what they see as an important local building or place and why it is important to them.
We are planning that the LHL for Attenborough, Beeston, Bramcote, Chilwell and Toton will be in place for the autumn of 2023.
Assessment
All suggestions will be assessed on a strict set of criteria as agreed with BBC.
Under the supervision of the BBC Heritage Officer, Toby Ebbs, we have convened a panel of volunteer Society members; and other contributors from interested groups, Societies and institutions to initially assess the merits of each proposal – together they will want to make the listing process successful
Final decisions on the list will be by some BBC Councillors, some of the initial panel and experts from the Nottinghamshire County Council, BBC and other Heritage organisations.
The Council will establish the List and maintain it. It is vital that we encourage and support them to do this – so that we don’t lose more architectural gems, or important community heritage. It is too late for The Maltings, the Town Hall and many other heritage buildings – let’s hope its not too late for others at risk.
