Beeston Civic Society submitted a thorough objection to the planning application to build 419 student only flats in the centre of Beeston. 

We welcomed Broxtowe Borough Council’s decision to refuse planning permission, and support their reasoning for doing so (as outlined below). 

We believe their decision at the appeal brought by the developers, Cassidy Group  is wrong – and shall be challenging it further.

This development is not wanted, not needed, and it is a broken promise.

Why planning permission was refused

• “The submitted scheme, by virtue of its size and design, represents an unsatisfactory development.” 
  The design of the building is a step-down from even that which was approved. The plot was heralded as site for ‘iconic gateway’ into the town, the submitted scheme does not deliver that.

• “The viability and the town centre would be affected if we do not have a community there all year.”
  The proposed restriction of occupation to students would also fail to maximise the potential contribution to town centre footfall during non-term periods.

• “The scheme would do nothing to help the council’s housing needs because there would be nothing for local people.” 
  The scheme is for students and only students.
  We need affordable homes for local permanent residents.
  Beeston does not need more student accomodation!

• “The proposal offered no parking for tenants.”
  It fails to provide sufficient car parking for a development of this magnitude and would increase street parking in surrounding areas which are already limited.
